Nutraceutical Development

BioMarker’s aging-intervention technologies provide us the pathway for the development of dietary supplements and other nutraceuticals with potent health benefits. By screening for compounds and components which have an effect on our models of lifespan extension, especially calorie restriction (CR), we can design and develop products that help prevent disease and promote overall health.

There are remarkable health benefits associated with CR and other extended life span models, including:

. The delay or prevention of the onset of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes), and neurodegenerative disease; (e.g. AD, PD);

. increased insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal and resistance to age-associated hyperinsulinemia;

. preservation and enhancement the immune responsiveness of older individuals;

. prolongation of the healthy period near the end of life; and finally

. extension of the maximum lifespan.

To achieve these benefits, we screen nutraceutical candidates for activity in our animal models, using DNA chips and proteomic analysis to monitor the expression response of genes and proteins.  This information can be used to guide the selection of bioactives which positively impact the biomechanisms associated with the CR or other extended life span model (see our Technology Platform page for details).  Such mechanisms may include:

  • Reducing oxidative stress and damage;
  • Preventing deleterious age-related changes in gene expression;
  • Improving energy metabolism;
  • Reducing DNA damage and increasing DNA repair capabilities;
  • Effecting neuroendocrine changes which extend lifespan; and
  • Slowing the rate of chromosome telomere shortening.
